Jelveh Javaheri and Maryam Hosseinkhah Released From Evin Prison

 

According to BBC Persian, Jelveh Javaheri and Maryam Hosseinkhah, two members of the One Million Signatures Campaign who were detained in the Evin prison, were released today (January 2nd).


Maryam Hosseinkhah was arrested on November 18 2007 and Jelveh Javaheri was arrested two weeks after Hosseinkhah. Their families had stated that they will not be able to pay the prohibitive bail of 100 million Tomans ( over $100,000) and had requested a reduction of the bail amount. After several weeks, the court finally reduced the bail to 5 million Tomans and the families were able to post bail. Both activists have been charged with disrupting public opinion, , propaganda against the state, and publication of lies through the publication of untrue news items on the site of the Women’s Cultural Center and the One Million Signatures Campaign.

 

Jelve Javaheri was born in 1977. She received her Bachelors degree in computer engineering. Presently, she is working toward a Masters of Art degree in Sociology at Alzahra University. Jelveh is one of the co-founders of “Hastia Andish Center” a leading women’s NGO, focused on promoting women’s rights, through education. The organization has addressed a variety of issues concerning women, including violence against women, HIV/AIDs, and women’s empowerment. Jelveh is one of the founders of the One Million Signatures Campaign, and has been very active in this movement. Her activities include setting up workshops, translations, interviews, journalism, sociological studies on women’s issues and publishing on a variety of websites and other media.


Maryam Hosseinkhah was born in March of 1980 in the city of Zanjan. She received her bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies. She is married and resides in Tehran. In her nine years of activism she has written numerous articles pertaining to women’s and social issues in Iran.
